step one

You will need a big enough pot so the pasta has plenty of room to move around, then bring the water to a full boil.  After the water is at a full boil, add a generous amount of salt to the water. Around 1-2 tablespoons per quart of water 

step two

​Add pasta to the salty boiling water. After adding the pasta to the water, the boiling will stop or slow down. It should take 1 minute to start full boil returns.
Then you can start the cooking time

step three

​cooking times
most of the pasta shapes will be
5-7 minutes 
for al dente
if the shape is small or thin, they will take LESS time
like ditatini and thin spaghetti
3-4 minutes
if the shape is thicker 
they will take MORE time 
like Rigatoni
8- 10 minutes

step four

​While the pasta is cooking and dancing around the pot with plenty of room to move. You can occasionally stir so the pasta is moving around freely, so some are not stuck on the button of the pot, so all the pasta can cook evenly
then when the cooking time is done. You can test a piece by removing one piece from the pot and tasting it to achieve the texture or doneness you desire.

step five

​When the pasta is at the doneness you desire, you can now remove the pasta from the pot. two ways to remove pasta from the boiling water
either by a corrender that is placed in your clean kitchen sink 
or
By using a handheld strainer, you can save pasta water to add to your sauce if needed.
